What Should I Buy? – Compare iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold

2008 November 13

I have been comparing BlackBerry Bold with iPhone for sometime and it has been a very close match.  If you own both devices, more power to you.  If you own either of these devices, there are a few reasons to own both if you can afford.

BlackBerry has a strong presence and is a clear winner in medium and large scale businesses.  It also supports almost all functions of Outlook and provides higher security using RIM’s BES server.  iPhone is better suited for small businesses.

BlackBerry Bold’s screen looks great but iPhone’s screen usage is more useful.  Same is the case with applications.  iPhone’s great gaming platform wins hand over fist over any other device in regards to applications.   App Store consistently offers newer applications.

BlackBerry stands a bit higher on longer battery life.  iPhone’s operating system is more sophisticated than BlackBerry’s.

If you plan to use the mobile keyboard extensively for emailing and like QWERTY keyboard, BlackBerry might be a good choice.  If not, iPhone’s on screen keyboard might be better.  There is copy and paste feature on iPhone though.  Auto-text completion is also cool on iPhone.  On BlackBerry, I could type longer, more accurate texts and emails without BlackBerry,

Each device costs between $199 to $299 and the prices are very comparable.  Both devices have GPS as well.

BlackBerry has been the dominant player in enterprise market while iPhone is making tidal waves in the consumer market such as personal number and personal email.

Overall, Blackberry excels as the business device and iPhone rules as the consumer device.  I own both and looking forward to the next generation of “smart” devices.

Have Fun!
